Dark to Light: From the Holocaust to America, the art of Lucy Kreisler Smith
Lucy Kreisler Smith was born on June 15, 1933 in Kraków, Poland.
Lucy was six years old when the German army occupied Poland. She was forced out of school, as it was no longer allowed for Jewish children.
After the war she studied painting and graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1959. She then went to Paris to paint.
She met an American man whom she married, and moved with him to Germany. Two years later they moved to the U.S. Twice an immigrant, she became a young divorced mother with an infant and no means of support.
She then survived tuberculosis.
This retrospective of her work ranges from her life in Kraków and throughout her life in America. The exhibition includes paintings in oil and acrylic, her experiments with textile, pencil/charcoal drawings, and painted glass.
I am her infant from Germany. I think her story is particularly relevant right now.
